NIAMH SCHMIDTKE
This handmade sheet of paper uses the Financial Times as its paper pulp. This repurposes the systemised process of newsprint so as to slow down our economy’s current rate of production.
My work revolves around my interest in the dynamics of capitalist systems, and how our current processes of economy are creating an excess of goods, ultimately leading to boom-bust cycles. My work focuses on slowing down these processes, as a way to analyse how they allow the average person to live their lives. By using the slow techniques of paper-making and pinhole photography, married to the speed of economic data and process I question how these worlds work together. Through this understanding of our economy, I hope to provoke new questions about what is valued in our current society and how our economy shapes our view of the world we live in.
